About the ELC:

Launched in January 1996, the mission of the Warren Wilson College Environmental Leadership Center (ELC) is to raise awareness of local, national and global environmental realities and to inspire caring citizens - especially our youth - to reflect, to communicate, and to act as responsible caretakers of the earth. The ELC is integral to and supports the central mission of Warren Wilson College - to provide an education combining liberal arts study, work, and service, with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and experiential opportunities for international and cross-cultural understanding in a setting that promotes wisdom, spiritual growth, and contribution to the common good.

The Environmental Leadership Center is determined to foster the dialog, develop the leaders, and apply the practices required to implement systemic change. Its vision is global, its focus is regional, and its initiatives are action-oriented and designed to address the most pressing environmental issues

WWC EcoDorm Serves As Case Study For New NC Conservation Bill 9/11/2007 - 9:40

The North Carolina legislature just ratified S668 - AN ACT TO PROMOTE THE CONSERVATION OF ENERGY AND WATER USE IN STATE, UNIVERSITY, AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE BUILDINGS. Data provided by the Campus Greening Crew for Warren Wilson's EcoDorm served as the case study for an energy efficient building, and was put foth by the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association (NCSEA) to promote the legislation.

This past spring, Warren Wilson's Campus Greening student crew provided McCayne Miller, Business and Outreach Manager for the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association, with information on the environmental performance of the EcoDorm. The EcoDorm, built in 2001, is pending LEED Platinum certification. Though it is commonly known that LEED designed buildings can save up to 50% in electric usage, monitoring energy usage in efficient buildings is not yet a common practice. Warren Wilson students captured and analyzed this data and their efforts were well-rewarded.

According to Miller, "The students, staff and faculty should be proud and share in celebrating this accomplishment - you played an important role in affecting change."
