Reference Books are a great way to start any research. Warren Wilson College has an good collection of reference books covering environmental issues. Here is a list of selected Reference Books.

WorldCat - searches the collections of libraries all over the world and indexes books, audiovisuals, & archival and manuscript materials.
NetLibrary and other E-Book Collections - around 60,000 full-text online e-books, covering all subjects.

JSTOR - you can select appropriate disciplines (Botany, Ecology, General Science, etc.)

New York Times - for national and international news, 2004 - present
Historical New York Times - for national and international news, 1851-2003
Newspaper Source - another good source of full-text newspaper articles, with over 100 papers covered.

EarthTrends: The Environmental Information Portal
Ecology Hall of Fame
EnviroLink - "The largest online environmental information resource on the planet," so they say. Contains an online library, a news service, an online gallery of earth-conscious art, and a section rating sites and events on the internet based on their environmental impact.
National Wildlife Federation - learn about issues important to this organization. Includes articles from their publications, action alerts, and other news items.
Natural Resources Defense Council - a wealth of environmental information is available on this organization's web site. Topics covered include clean air and water, global warming, wildlife, forests, nuclear issues, cities and green living, environmental legislation, and more.
Nature Conservancy
Sierra Club - contains action alerts, articles from Sierra, and news items. There's also an issues section, with lots of great info on each issue (e.g., ancient forests, clean air, population, global warming, etc.).
