Destination Peace Corps

Amelia

Amelia entered Warren Wilson College with no Spanish language training yet graduated with a double major in Spanish and Global Studies. Speaking Spanish became an integral part of her experience in school and out in the broader community, both in the mountains of Western North Carolina and eventually in Latin America.

The Warren Wilson Triad of academics, work, and service allowed Amelia to utilize her new Spanish language skills in many different areas. She spoke Spanish in service with the Asheville migrant community and during her Service Learning Senior Capstone in nearby Henderson County, which has a growing Latin American population due to the agricultural industry there. Her junior year she also studied abroad for a semester in Mexico, and the next summer she returned to the state of Michoacan to study family members of migrants for her Senior Global Studies thesis research.

After graduation, Amelia put her majors to use when she joined the Peace Corps to be assigned to working in youth development in Peru. Her Warren Wilson Spanish skills enabled her to give health-oriented presentations to adolescents, to form and conduct a health radio program, to form eight youth health promoter groups, to help organize youth leadership camps, to organize heath presentations in the schools and to organize a school wide recycling program. "I used Spanish from dawn to dusk in San Marcos and occasionally dreamt in Spanish," she says.

Though at times she may be thousands of miles from campus, Amelia says "the experiences and skills I gained there continue to influence my decisions and life goals… I left with tremendous respect for the Warren Wilson College triad because it made my education complete on many levels."

Next up for Amelia: a full-ride scholarship to the Erasmus Mundus Master's in Public Policy, a double Master's Degree program to study Public Policy and Administration at the University of York in the UK and International Relations in Barcelona at IBEI. And in the meantime, she's "been thinking of picking up a new language... French, perhaps?"
