Graduates of Warren Wilson College's Teacher Education Program can secure a Class "A" North Carolina initial teaching license. North Carolina has reciprocity with most states, the District of Columbia, and the Overseas Dependent Schools; a teaching license opens many doors. Licensing requirements vary among states, but graduates will usually find themselves initially qualified to teach almost anywhere. The Teacher Education Program is approved by the state of North Carolina and is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Conceptual Framework

The Warren Wilson College teacher candidate is a reflective innovator serving in communities with head, heart, and hands.

The Teacher Education Program sets specific goals for future educators. Beyond meeting basic North Carolina licensure requirements, graduates must exhibit knowledge, skills, and dispositions demonstrating

  1. Passion for, and commitment to, understanding learners and learning;
  2. Agility and creativity in teaching built on knowledge of academic disciplines;
  3. Initiative and responsibility in promoting and recognizing student learning; and
  4. Self-reliance and collegiality within the teaching profession, balancing individual reflection and learning from experience with the support and necessary guidance of veteran educators.

These goals are the basis from which individual course and field work objectives are drawn.

Programs in Teacher Education

Grades: Students are required to maintain an overall QPA of not less than 2.5, with a minimum grade of C required in all courses taken towards the major.

Requirements: Credit hours and courses may vary in order to meet changing North Carolina licensing requirements. Therefore the courses listed for Elementary Education (K-6) and the secondary teaching license program are typical, and subject to change. Detailed descriptions of the various programs offered at Warren Wilson College are described in the Teacher Education Handbook. This handbook is available upon request from the Department of Education. Education students must pass the PRAXIS I standardized national test of general knowledge before formal admittance into the Teacher Education Program. Students are required to demonstrate computer technology competency as part of earning their teaching licenses. Students may also be required to pass the PRAXIS II pedagogy and content-area examinations for state licensing.

Academic Major with Secondary Teaching License

The student fulfilling a major in Biology, English, Mathematics, or History and Political Science may, upon completion of the designated professional education courses, successful student teaching, and approval of the Teacher Education Committee, obtain licensing at the secondary (9-12) level. Students will be assigned one advisor in the major field and one advisor from the Education Department. A typical Secondary Education (9-12) program may include the following professional courses:

Minor in Education

Grades: Students are required to maintain an overall average of not less than 2.5 QPA, with a minimum grade of C required in all courses taken towards the minor.

The student fulfilling a major in the Sciences, English, Mathematics, or History and Political Science may, upon completion of the designated professional education courses and approval of the Teacher Education Committee, obtain a minor in Education with a focus in secondary education (9-12). Students majoring in other fields should contact the Education Department regarding eligibility for an Education minor. Students completing the minor are not eligible for a North Carolina license; however, in many cases the only additional requirement for a secondary license would be completion of student teaching.
