- The English faculty strongly urge students to develop a reading proficiency in a second language and a knowledge of a literary tradition other than their own. The English faculty also strongly recommend that students majoring in English complete a minor in a field related to their study of English.
Honors Program: The English Honors Program provides the student of unusual ability and interest in the study of American and English literatures with the opportunity to work with other students of similar ability and to pursue research in areas of individual interest. Students satisfying the requirements of the English Honors Program receive special designation at graduation and on their diplomas and transcripts. Students pursuing the honors degree should plan to enroll in the honors seminar twice but may designate a 300-level English course in a major author or major period (or an equivalent study-abroad course) as a substitution for one of the honors seminars. Students who make substitutions must make arrangements to do so in advance of taking the course and must have the instructor's approval; the writing and research requirements for students who have designated a course as honors will be more intensive than the normal requirements for the course. Honors students must also complete a senior thesis, usually of 10 pages. Students should maintain a B average overall and must earn B grades or above in the honors offerings, including the thesis. See English Department Chair for details.
