Gender and Women's Studies

Faculty: David J. Bradshaw, Sally Fischer, Carol Howard, Louly Konz, Siti Kusujiarti, Angela Phillips, Jeanne Sommer, Marty O'Keefe, Laura Vance (Chair)

Women's Studies explores the intersections of gender, class, race, and ethnicity as they focus on women's lives and experiences. By examining dynamics affecting the empowerment and the exclusion and oppression of women, this interdisciplinary perspective encourages students to address the diversity of gender perspectives. Courses are drawn from many disciplines and introduce students to the intellectual, social, political, economic, spiritual, and artistic contributions and experiences of women in a variety of historical, global, and cultural contexts. Women's Studies provides students with a critical and interdisciplinary perspective on the social construction of gender and opportunities to bring this framework to bear in a variety of careers and areas of graduate study. Furthermore, Women's Studies is an excellent complement to other majors if students choose to earn a double major.
