Latin American Civilization traces the history of this region from pre-Columbian times to the present. Early topics considered include the Indian heritage, Spanish and Portuguese colonization, and the attainment of political independence. The course stresses the period since independence (1820s), with an eye toward enabling the student to understand the present character of the region and its problems. Included is an examination of the historic role of the United States in the region.
