An introduction to skills, theory, and practice necessary for safe and enjoyable winter camping. Through class discussions, field trips, and a class project, students will learn the following winter camping skills: clothing and layering systems; techniques for staying warm and dry in wet, cold climates; appropriate winter gear (tents, bags, and pads); fire building and cooking over a fire; cold-related injuries and their treatments; travel in cold, wet climates; stove operation and safety; and appropriate food and calorie intake for winter trips.
