This course explores Africa, south of the Sahara, from the perspective of sociology and cultural anthropology. A substantial overview of Sub-Saharan African politics, social conditions and challenges to development sets the broader context for this course. More focused inquiries on a number of integrated themes - such as community, transformation, and human rights - within specific national contexts provide students with the opportunity to explore particular case studies that illustrate the richness and socio-cultural complexities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
