Music Cultures of the World

Gamelan Music

On Wednesday afternoon the distance from Central Java to Swannanoa didn't seem to be more than 10,000 miles away. WWC students in Dr. Milton Crotts' Music Cultures of the World class had a hands-on opportunity to experience the music of this Indonesian island with guests from Dr. Will Peebles and the Western Carolina University Gamelan (Indonesian Orchestra). The so called "Low Tech" ensemble performed in Gladfelter Dining Hall during lunch, followed by a class activity where WWC students had the opportunity to play and discuss the instruments of Gamelan. Music Cultures of the World surveys music as an activity in people's lives, as a symbol of historical or national identity and as a form of artistic expression. The WCU Gamelan provided a wonderful opportunity to experience a live performance/demonstration and observe music's greater meaning and significance in the lives of people around the world.
