"Never underestimate a vegetarian hippie chick with a racecar" or the ELC at Warren Wilson College!
On June 24, 2009 the Mountain Green conference at Warren Wilson kicked off with Leilani Münter, one of the top 10 female racecar drivers in the world and conference keynote speaker, releasing a rehabilitated, orphaned owl back into the wild.
Leilani Münter (www.carbonfreegirl.com) is an eco-minded vegetarian and biology graduate turned racecar driver, who is on a mission to be carbon neutral and also to "clean up" the #1 spectator sport in America one race at a time.
While Mountain Green (www.mountiaingreenwnc.org) is a year-long program of the Environmental Leadership Center of Warren Wilson College (ELC) that began in 2006, which provides an annual conference, a public lunch and learn series, and a service component, INSULATE!, to promote sustainable community practices for our mountain region. The Mountain Green conference features experts in architecture, development, energy, and construction to discuss best practices along with a professional vendor expo with displays of the latest green technologies.
Besides the owl release and a great variety of sessions on sustainable tourism, green construction, tax incentives for going green, conservation development, local craft and even Warren Wilson's own Organic Mechanic (Charlie Wilson '03), Fired Up Kitchen made pizzas and the blues band Skinny Legs and All preformed in the Warren Wilson Chapel.
Like Warren Wilson students, Leilani believes people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, usually do.
