Warren Wilson College is excited to announce a partnership with the Universidad de Oriente (UNO), one of Mexico's newest universities, in Valladolid. Warren Wilson students who spend a semester at the Universidad de Oriente will have the opportunity to study advanced Spanish, gastronomy, education, sustainable tourism, environmental studies, linguistics and Maya culture, while UNO students may spend a semester in the Blue Ridge Mountains partaking of Warren Wilson's course offerings. Like Warren Wilson, the Universidad de Oriente emphasizes cross-cultural understanding and environmental responsibility alongside academics and community service.
One of Asheville's sister cities, Valladolid is a small city on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, located near the ruins of Chichen Itza. For years, Valladolid was a stronghold of Maya resistance to Spanish colonizers, and it remains an important center for contemporary Maya culture. Approximately seventy percent of UNO students speak Mayan as their first language. Most live at home with their families, and WWC students may live with Mexican host families as well, allowing them to integrate further into the local community and culture while strengthening their Spanish skills.
Warren Wilson's strong academic programs and its emphasis on work, community service, international awareness, and environmental stewardship appealed to UNO leaders. For its part, Warren Wilson is pleased to affiliate with a new, vibrant institution that offers such a unique opportunity for Spanish majors and those with advanced Spanish skills. Warren Wilson students interested in studying at the Universidad de Oriente should contact the International Programs Office for more information.
Warren Wilson College encourages every qualified student the opportunity to study off-campus as part of a cross-cultural educational experience. This off-campus experience is integral to the College's academic mission.
