In economic good times and bad, WWC remains a Fiske “Best Buy”

2010 Fiske Guide

For the fourth consecutive year, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has named Warren Wilson as one of its 24 “Best Buys” among private colleges and universities nationwide.

According to the 2010 guide, schools “qualify as Best Buys based on the quality of the academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance” – or as the guide also puts it, “outstanding academics with relatively modest prices.”

In addition to giving the college high marks for its academics and affordability, the Fiske guide awards Warren Wilson the highest possible rating for its overall quality of life: five stars, as opposed to the guide’s norm of three.

EcoTeam program receives Progress Energy grant for 2 new lessons

The EcoTeam program of the Environmental Leadership Center has been awarded a grant from Progress Energy Carolinas to help expand its curriculum to include new lessons on energy and climate.

The $2,000 grant for curriculum development is being awarded through Progress Energy’s Community Energy Advisory Council. Buncombe County educator Donalyn Small will develop the energy and climate lessons, working closely with WWC EcoTeam program manager Stan Cross, the 2007 N.C. Environmental Educator of the Year.

EcoTeam is a science-based environmental curriculum for third-grade students that correlates with the N.C. Standard Course of Study. The EcoTeam curriculum, taught by trained Warren Wilson students and focusing on the French Broad River Basin, has delivered lessons to thousands of third graders in Asheville and Buncombe County since its inception in 1998.

Warren Wilson is among 150 four-year colleges recognized in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2009 Great Colleges to Work For® program. The program recognizes “small groups of colleges (based on enrollment size) for specific best practices and policies, such as compensation and benefits, faculty/administration relations and confidence in senior leadership.” Warren Wilson is one of only 11 colleges cited in the category of “Housing Assistance Programs” for faculty and staff, for schools with fewer than 3,000 students.
