Chiara integrates the Triad

Emily Chiara ’13, who is studying food production in India as part of her global studies degree, volunteers at The Lord's Acre to produce food for a local food bank. She thinks that service brings the other two legs of the Triad—academics and work—together. "I never wanted to be a student who stayed on campus, focused on herself for four years and then left," Chiara said. "Service teaches students that they are a part of a community and that it’s their role to help out in whatever way they can."

2013 Fiske Guide names WWC a “Best Buy”

For the seventh time since 2005, the Fiske Guide to Colleges has chosen Warren Wilson as one of the nation’s 20 “Best Buys” among private colleges and universities.

According to the 2013 guide, schools “qualify as Best Buys based on the quality of the academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance” – or as the book also puts it, “outstanding academics with relatively modest prices.” With tuition and fees of under $28,000 for the 2012-13 academic year, Warren Wilson is rated as “inexpensive” in relation to other private colleges and universities in the selective guide.

Fiske Guide

In its narrative on the college, the Fiske guide notes, “Success at Warren Wilson is measured not only by grades, but by community service and a sense of stewardship…. Roots in the culture of Appalachia combine with a strong international and environmental orientation to give Warren Wilson its unique flavor.”

In addition to giving the college high marks for its academics, affordability and social life, the Fiske guide gives Warren Wilson the highest possible rating for its overall quality of life for undergraduate students.

The Fiske Guide to Colleges, first published in 1982, has been called “the best college guide you can buy” by USA Today.

President Solnick attends Appalachian Energy Summit

In his first week as Warren Wilson College’s seventh president, Steve Solnick, joined 22 other leaders of N.C. colleges and universities in signing a declaration to work together to reduce fossil fuel use and spur the state’s renewable energy economy.

The declaration was part of the three-day Appalachian Energy Summit in Boone hosted by Thomas Ross, president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina, in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Institute. Because of its long history of reducing energy use, Warren Wilson was one of only five private colleges invited.

In addition to Solnick, Warren Wilson was represented by a group that included the college dean, trustee vice chair, students, faculty members, and staff from campus operations and the Environmental Leadership Center. The group returned with new ideas and a renewed sense of purpose to improve energy efficiency and reduce fossil fuel use on campus.

Weekend@Wilson

What do chickens, beer and poker have in common? All three were workshop topics offered at this year’s Weekend@Wilson in June. Alumni, friends and families came to campus to enjoy a relaxing weekend full of workshops, good food and dorm living. Over 25 workshops were offered, including the perennial favorites of blacksmithing and the brewery tour as well as new offerings like astronomy and painting. In addition to classes, folks had a chance to catch up with old friends, make new connections and listen to good music by the alum-led band, the Greasy Beans. Check out photos from Weekend@Wilson and plan to join the fun in 2013.

Homecoming and Family Weekend—October 5-7, 2012

Return home this fall for a chance to visit with old friends, eat tasty barbecue on the farm and cheer for the Fighting Owls in soccer and swimming. Special events for Homecoming include meeting our new president, Steve Solnick; dancing to a student band during the square dance; and honoring our 2012 alumni award winners.

Family Weekend is a chance to enjoy time with your Warren Wilson student this fall. Parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends are invited to join us. Spend your time attending classes, rafting down the French Broad, going to a student open mic and more. For more information, contact Ally Wilson.

2011-12 WWC Fund exceeds goal

Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents and friends, we exceeded our 2011-12 Warren Wilson College Fund goal by 8.5%, raising a total of $569,793.34 from 1,056 donors. WWC Fund donors help students experience the Triad of academics, work and service and prepare for careers that will benefit our community and our world. The number of donors is as important as dollars raised since foundations, friends and college ranking services look at participation when they consider supporting the College. We are thankful for exceeding our goal and look forward to increasing the participation next year. The gift given is more than the dollars; it is a testament of support for the people and mission of the College.
