Warren Wilson College hires firm in search for eighth presidentOctober 31, 2016
Board members promise transparency in meeting with faculty, staff
Warren Wilson College has retained Coleman Lew + Associates of Charlotte to assist with its search for a new president. The announcement came Friday as members of the College Board of Trustees met with staff and faculty members to ensure transparency throughout the search process.
Warren Wilson College board member Lach Zemp, an Asheville attorney chairing the presidential search committee, said the selection came from a group of nearly 10 firms.
“We chose Coleman Lew for a number of reasons,” Zemp said. “We felt they expressed a very deep interest in Warren Wilson College. They assured me that they view Warren Wilson as their client and will take a very proactive approach to finding the best fit for moving the college forward. It’s encouraging to know the firm’s team will give us their all throughout this process.”
Warren Wilson College is the latest higher education institution Coleman Lew has assisted with a presidential search. Other recent successful searches include Salem College, William Peace University, Spartanburg Methodist College, Coker College, Catawba College and Lander College. Zemp interviewed search committee chairs from several of these schools, and those conversations ultimately led Warren Wilson to select Coleman Lew.
“The people from these colleges described a firm dedicated to finding a leader that will continue to move Warren Wilson College forward,” Zemp added.
In a nod to expectations for transparency, Zemp indicated the company would create a portal where staff and faculty members can track the committee’s progress. While applicants will not be visible outside of the committee, he did note Coleman Lew’s commitment to a diverse candidate pool.
Steering subcommittees within the campus community are also being created to help staff and faculty members and students deliver thoughts and questions to the search committee. In addition, Zemp affirmed that he and the committee also welcome the opportunity to connect with the Warren Wilson community and encouraged members to contact him directly with their input or questions.
Warren Wilson’s search for a new leader comes as President Steve Solnick was selected to lead the Calhoun School in New York City. Solnick will remain at the College until June 30, and a new president is expected to be in place by July 1.
In addition to Zemp, Warren Wilson College’s presidential search committee members are senior Melvis Madrigal, board member and alumna Jessica Culpepper, board member and alumnus Andy Scott, board chair and alumnus Bill Christy, creative writing professor Catina Bacote, board member Mike Condrey, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College Paula Garrett, Vice President for Enrollment Janelle Holmboe, Associate Dean for Community Engagement Brooke Millsaps, board member Susan Pauly and board member Anthony Rust.
