Warren Wilson College President William Sanborn Pfeiffer

William Sanborn "Sandy" Pfeiffer, Ph.D., was selected by the Warren Wilson College Board of Trustees in March 2006 as the sixth president in the history of the College. He officially became president on July 1, 2006.

Before coming to Warren Wilson, Pfeiffer was provost and vice president for academic affairs at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah. He was interim president of Ramapo — New Jersey's public liberal arts college — from July 2004 to June 2005. Pfeiffer also was a tenured professor of international studies at Ramapo, where he taught Japanese culture.

Pfeiffer was vice president for academic affairs at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia, before moving to Ramapo. Previously he had been a department head at Southern Polytechnic, where he also helped develop undergraduate and graduate programs in technical communication that rank among the nation's best.

He is the author of numerous publications on Japanese studies and on technical and professional communication. His major work is Technical Communication: A Practical Approach, now in its sixth edition.

A native of Ohio, Pfeiffer has taught at Southern Polytechnic State University, the University of Houston Downtown College, Southwest Texas State University and Kent State University. He holds degrees in English from Amherst College and Kent State University.
