Depth of Service

B.J.

"To hang out with him for a while is to risk the danger of getting involved." That's what one of B.J. Scofield's friends said of him. It's clear that B.J.'s commitment to service originates in that selfless place that shrugs off awards and wants no attention. Service to others is simply a part of who he is.

One of the most impressive aspects of B.J. Scofield's service record at Warren Wilson is its depth. During his time at the College he served relatively few agencies while racking up an impressive 651 hours of service, preferring to focus on a handful whose missions match his own beliefs. One such organization is CooperRiis, a residential community for folks with mental illness and emotional distress. BJ devoted a summer to CooperRiis as an unpaid intern, and his senior service reflection reveals how the experience shaped his outlook. "My views on mental illness were challenged and I gained a new appreciation for my own health," he says. "It was very humbling to be in a position where I could help someone heal and integrate back into society."

Along with B.J.'s commitment to service and community, he has a unique way of transitioning from volunteerism to activism. One such transition occurred after B.J.'s spent time in the farm worker communities of Immokalee, Florida. Initially, B.J. put his computer and design skills to work for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, but his passion for justice and belief in farm worker rights led him to an activist's role. He brought an awareness campaign to Warren Wilson, getting other students involved in what Andy Summers called "models of persuasion that activated responses from many students."

B.J. shares with many Warren Wilson students a commitment to helping the disadvantaged and the belief that only consistent day-to-day serving of others leads to positive change.
