The Scholar-Servant

Justin

Everyone would agree - during his time at Warren Wilson, Justin Levy was the swami of service. He structured his integrative studies major to focus specifically on the issue of hunger in the United States. Through an independent study as a freshman, Justin wrote a curriculum for hosting food drives in elementary and high schools. In a sophomore sociology class, he worked with his professor to transform a basic reading assignment on poverty to a full-on hurricane-relief trip to New Orleans.

"This is how I learn best - by doing something meaningful," Justin says. Simply put, he hopes to inspire others to help those in need. The integrative studies major gave him full reign to develop service learning initiatives. He has a detailed proposal for starting his own non-profit and is working with Colorado's non-profit Conscious Alliance on the Youth Against Hunger program.

In concert with Conscious Alliance the Warren Wilson Service Learning Office, Justin organized a service trip to Pine Ridge, a Lakota reservation in South Dakota and one of the poorest regions of the country. The weeklong service trip had Warren Wilson students waking up early each day and doing a variety of community service. With the help and donations of Conscious Alliance, the group was able to deliver a 16-foot box truck full of food to a reservation food bank created by community leaders Floyd and Natalie Hand. Levy says the trip left a lasting impact on the students. "The Hands are trying to show how the land and the people should be treated," he said. "I think it's a real lesson coming from our own fast-paced lives where it's always 'us, us, us,' and not the person next to us."
