Ashley Gearing to perform at Weekend @ WWC
Country singer Ashley Gearing, the youngest female to chart on a Billboard Country Chart, will perform a free concert June 23, 7 p.m., in Kittredge Theater. When Gearing debuted on the charts at age 12 in June 2003, she broke a record that had stood for 46 years, beating out Brenda Lee by just a few months. Gearing’s single, “Can You Hear Me When I Talk to You?” was a hit before she had a recording contract. She comes to Asheville fresh off the release of her album “Maybe It’s Time.”
The Springfield, Mass., resident has appeared at such famous sports venues in her home state as Fenway Park, where she sang the national anthem at a 2004 American League Championship Series game, and the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, where she recently spoke to several hundred inner-city students as part of the MVP of Character Speaker series. Gearing will be at Warren Wilson as part of the Weekend @ WWC, a series of workshops offered to WWC alumni by the Office of College Relations. The weekend, spanning June 23-25, gives alumni an opportunity to spend a few days reconnecting with their college experience through short classes and social activities.

Water Service Restored
Water service has now been fully restored following Sunday’s interruption to much of campus. The work done on the campus water system Sunday was successful. It was a major step in the process of connecting the new water lines to the existing system and providing water service to the new residence halls. We are on schedule for finishing up the work of the new water system by July 1. We appreciate your patience and understanding through this process and invite your feedback on how we could have done better to inform the campus of the interruption in water service. Contact Christopher Fielden at cfielden@warren-wilson.edu or ext. 3032 if you have any comments. Thank you!
More Updates from FMTS
*Kittredge parking lot is temporarily closed while it is being redesigned and repaved. The parking lot is expected to be completed by the beginning of July. However, the parking lot will be available for parking for the special events during the week of June 19-23.
*Work continues on the two new residence hall buildings. Construction is expected to be completed on schedule at the beginning of August.
*The renovation of Sage has begun. The exterior of the building is being renovated and all of the exterior walls are being insulated to make the building much more energy efficient. In addition, all of the windows are being replaced with new, efficient, “low-e” double-pane windows.
*The renovation of Vining is now underway. The purpose of the work is to solve the drainage and water problems and to install new landscaping around the buildings.
*This year, Jensen will be getting a new heating and cooling system, which includes a geothermal well, and an elevator. The elevator work will start in the next few weeks. The wells will be drilled August 13-27. During this time, it will be very loud in the Jensen vicinity and the road will often be closed. In addition, up to 20 staff parking spaces will be blocked off. We will continue to provide information, have signs posted, traffic patterns identified, and do our best to minimize inconveniences.
*The construction of the new campus composting operation continues adjacent to the Recycling Center. Currently, the slab is being poured. The area will house the GreenDrum, amendment storage, and curing piles, as well as two waste containers. The project is expected to be finished by the end of the summer.
*For updates and information on construction happening on the campus, visit http://www.warren-wilson.edu/~fmts/construction.shtml.

Did you know?
The Log Cabin, which currently houses the Work Program Office and the adjacent College Press, was originally called the Log Library. It was designed by Oscar Clark and is made with pine logs that were cut on campus in 1933. The two millstones were obtained from Pisgah National Forest. The wings were added in 1952 and structural work was done in 2001.
Carson Hall, designed in the neoclassical style, was built in 1926. It was named for Mrs. Anne C. Carson of Cincinnati, Ohio, who left money for its construction in memory of her sister, Mrs. Margaret Kyle. It originally housed the president’s office and all other administrative offices as well as classrooms. It was renovated in 1978.
Dodge House, the oldest building on campus, is made in the style of the early Sears/Roebuck precut homes in 1901. Dodge House was first the home for Dr. D. Stuart Dodge, who served as president of the Board of National Missions of the Presbyterian Church and superintendent of the school.
Bryson Gymnasium was originally called Holmes Bryson Gymnasium, built in 1920. Holmes Bryson served as mayor of Asheville and was a graduate of the school. Bryson is one of the oldest wooden floor gymnasiums in Western North Carolina.
