Collins awarded grant to work with remote telescope and camera

Physics professor Don Collins has received a research grant from the American Astronomical Society to engage in remote telescope and camera control at the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) near Rosman, NC. Collins and WWC student George Keel of Fairview will work with Drs. Mel Blake and Michael Castelaz at PARI on “The Observation of Cataclysmic Variable Stars with Remote Telescope.” The $4,950 grant will enable another WWC student, Michael Fink of Islamorada, Fla., to do computer programming in order to develop classroom exercises associated with cataclysmic variable star light curves. According to its website, Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute provides research and educational opportunities for a broad cross-section of users in radio and optical astronomy, and in the related disciplines of physics, mathematics, engineering, earth sciences, chemistry and computer science. Pre-college through post-graduate students have the opportunity to work and learn with full-time and visiting astronomers. Additional access is provided on a remote basis – through the Internet and the StarLab planetarium – to grades K-12 and the public.

Removal of pines near Morse

Tall pine trees just south of Morse have been removed after succumbing to ips beetle infestation.  According to Richard Sanders, who removed the trees with the help of the Landscaping Crew, ips beetles infect trees in more localized areas and are less dangerous than southern pine beetles. The trees were so tall that Richard was able to cut enough 21’ planks to build a much-needed new sawmill shed.

FAQ: Wireless network access

Are the new dorms going to be wired?
Network Services has learned that some students have been told that there will be wired and wireless network access in the new dorms. This is incorrect. There has never been a plan to have wired access in the new dorms.  To be clear: the new dorms will have ONLY wireless access.

Isn't wireless access slower/not as good?
Some people seem to think that wireless is somehow inferior to wired access. This is not correct. It is true that the overall network speed is lower with wireless rather than with wired Ethernet. However this is mostly imperceptible to users.  A faster connection to the campus network will not make your Internet access any faster. Internet speed is limited by the College's connection to the Internet and not the on-campus network.  Wireless access actually has benefits not provided by wired access. You have more freedom in the placement of your computer since you do not have to worry with a wall jack.

Where can I use wireless?
We are adding more wireless access around campus. By the start of classes you will be able to take your wireless-enabled laptop to the library, Bannerman, Witherspoon, Spidel, Gladfelter and possibly other locations. Schafer and the new dorms are also wireless.

Can I bring my own wireless access point?
In short, no. As noted above we are adding more access points around campus. Unauthorized access points may interfere with access points that we are installing. Any unauthorized access points will be turned off.

What equipment do we need?
To access the wireless network you will need a 802.11b or 802.11g network card.  Many new laptops have one built in. For laptops that do not have wireless built in you will need a PC Card 802.11b/g network adapter. If you have a desktop we recommend a PCI 802.11g network adapter. You can use a USB version but the PCI cards have more power and thus a better range.

Anything else we should know?
Yes! Do not bring 2.4GHz cordless phones if you live in the new dorms or Schafer. These phones use the same frequency as the access points and can cause them to have problems.

GoodSearch for WWC

GoodSearch is a Yahoo-powered search engine with a unique mission –
50% of its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, is shared with non-profits selected by its users. Paul Magnarella in Peace Studies has arranged for WWC to be one of the schools that Goodseach will recognize for the purpose of receiving the approximately $.01 per use of its search engine. Each time someone uses http://www.goodsearch.com (and types in “Warren Wilson College” in the “I am supporting” box) one cent will come to the College. The resulting money may be enough to help fund one or more guest speakers to campus. You can make GoodSearch the homepage or default search engine for your computers so that every time you search the Internet, you’ll be raising money for WWC.  Info: Paul Magnarella,  ext. 2014.
