The Story Behind...
a series of campus images.

Warren Wilson among 12 schools profiled in
“Old Main: Small Colleges in Twenty-First Century America.”

What Do Warren Wilson Students Do On Breaks?
All sorts of interesting things. Here is just a sample:

Warren Wilson to host bipartisan discussion on climate change
As part of Focus the Nation events on global warming, Warren Wilson College is hosting local elected officials who will engage in a nonpartisan roundtable discussion on climate change Wed., Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. in Canon Lounge. The event precedes a national teach-in and other campus events that Warren Wilson and many schools across the country will engage in on Jan. 31. The panel includes state Rep. Susan Fisher, D-Buncombe; state Rep. Charles Thomas, R-Buncombe; Asheville City Council member Brownie Newman; and Kelly Sheehan from the Asheville office of U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C. Warren Wilson students Gideon Burdick and Nina Otter will moderate the roundtable. According to its website at focusthenation.org, “Focus the Nation is a national teach-in engaging millions of students and citizens with political leaders and decision makers about global warming solutions…. creating a dialogue at over a thousand colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, places of worship, civic organizations and businesses.”

Library exhibit on climate issues
Check out the new exhibit in the library lobby. To support upcoming Focus the Nation activities on campus, Ellenor Frelick has put together an attractive and informative display about global climate issues and Warren Wilson's efforts towards sustainability. Thanks to everyone who has lent expertise and loaned materials to help this come together.

Berry Site work of David Moore and colleagues to be featured on UNC-TV
The research by David Moore and fellow archaeologists at the Berry Site near Morganton will be featured in a program titled, “The First Lost Colony,” an episode of “Exploring North Carolina” that will air statewide on UNC-TV Jan. 31 at 8:30 p.m. Two decades before Sir Walter Raleigh established the famous Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, Spanish conquistador and captain Juan Pardo built Fort San Juan in the Appalachian foothills. Today, aided by a National Science Foundation grant, Moore and colleagues Robin Beck and Christopher Rodning are exploring a 12-acre site along Upper Creek where an ancestral Catawba Indian town was located before Fort San Juan was built in 1567. The garrison, with its 20-year predating of the Lost Colony, was the earliest European settlement in the interior of what is now the United States. Under the auspices of the Upper Catawba Archaeology Project, the archaeologists are researching the long-forgotten episode of Fort San Juan’s founding and subsequent fiery destruction in the spring of 1568. The 2007 Warren Wilson College Archaeology Field School, directed by Moore and in partnership with Western Piedmont Community College, focused excavations on a one-acre area where 16th-century Spanish artifacts and the remains of five burned buildings have been located. See unctv.org/exploringNC/episode405.html to read a description of the segment on the work that Moore and others are doing to uncover more answers about the short-lived, but highly significant, Fort San Juan.

Fairtrade coffee
Fairtrade Coffee is organic, shade-grown coffee produced by farmer cooperatives in many developing nations of the world. Not only is it excellent coffee, but buying it benefits small farmers. Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church participates in this project by ordering Fairtrade Coffee by the case -- each case containing 6 packages -- four times a year. The winter order is being put together between Jan. 27 and March 10. Order blanks and information are available in the narthex of the chapel on Sunday mornings from 10-11 a.m. Or, you can call Julia Richards at 298-06722 for information.

Winter weather reminders
The best sources of information for WWC emergency and weather-related announcements are the College Hotline, (828) 258-4521, the Inside page, (http://www.warren-wilson.edu/internal/index.php), and WWC Public Safety (771-4357) . The hotline and inside page will be updated as soon as there is weather-related information to report. If you are without phone service, you can check the local broadcast media, which will air an announcement only if there is a closing or delay. If you also are without electricity but have a battery-powered radio, 570 AM or 1350 AM are the best continuing sources of information regarding a closing or delay. The College typically remains open even in the event of extreme weather. Working with Public Safety, the Communications and Media Relations Offices will provide up-to-date information on road conditions in the vicinity of the College. The relatively flat Old U.S. 70/Bee Tree Road “back way” from Swannanoa often provides a good alternate route to campus in snowy or icy conditions. Occasionally, some class meetings may be canceled or crew work altered if the professor or supervisor is unable to travel to campus. If a work crew supervisor is not available, students should report to the Work Program Office, as the crew may still need to function without a supervisor. Severe weather also may prevent staff from getting to the library to open it on time. In such a situation the library will open as soon as the first staff member arrives. It also may be necessary for the library to close early so that library staff can return home safely. Even in those rare cases when classes are canceled, the College will continue operations for the well-being of residential students. The best assumption in each case is that the College will be open and that classes/work crews will meet as scheduled.
