Anita Brown-Graham will open our 2010 Sustainability Speakers Series. Since 2007, as director of North Carolina’s Institute for Emerging Issues, she has worked alongside state leaders like Governor Jim Hunt to focus citizens from the mountains to the coast on the state’s most pressing issues. From energy and climate change to creativity and innovation, Brown-Graham understands North Carolina’s threats and its opportunities and works to inspire and educate the state’s leaders to collaborate on behalf of a thriving and resilient quality of life for all its citizens. Brown-Graham, an attorney, has also conducted significant training and written books and articles focused on developing the economic base of distressed communities.
Bill McKibben, one of America's best known environmentalists, serves as the Headwaters Gathering speaker for 2010, a partnership event of Warren Wilson, The Wilderness Society and Orion magazine. In 2010 the Boston Globe called him "the nation's leading environmentalist" and Time magazine described him as "the world's best green journalist.” Over the last quarter century, his books have shaped public perception and public action on climate change, alternative energy, and the need for more localized economies. McKibben is founder of 350.org, a global grassroots climate change initiative which spawned thousands of events in most of the world's nations on October 24, 2009. His most recent book is Eaarth…Making A Life On A Tough New Planet.
The Washington Post called Lester Brown "one of the world's most influential thinkers." The Telegraph of Calcutta refers to him as "the guru of the environmental movement." In 1986, the Library of Congress requested his personal papers noting that his writings "have already strongly affected thinking about problems of world population and resources." In May 2001, Brown founded the Earth Policy Institute to provide a vision and a road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy. In November 2001, he published Eco Economy: Building an Economy for the Earth, which was hailed by E.O. Wilson as "an instant classic." His most recent book is Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization.
