Join the ELC on an Expedition

For eco-minded adventure travelers seeking renewal and discovery in wild and beautiful locales, Environmental Leadership Center Expeditions are for you. Our trips provide an ecological, cultural, and spiritual immersion, in wonderful company, in some of the world's most beautiful and richly diverse habitats including those in our own backyard. Though they vary in length, cost, and season, Expeditions are always memorable and forge a deep connection to the natural world. To date, we have traveled to Belize, the Bahamas, Northern Ontario, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Grand Canyon, and Baja.

We also explore regions closer to home, hiking the Art Loeb Trail and mountain biking the Virginia Creeper Trail, to understand the ecology of our own backyard.

Future trips will include one-day trail seminars. In 2007 we returned to the original ELC Expedition the Voyageur Journey by canoe in Northern Ontario.

Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood and participant in the ELC's Belize Expedition wrote an essay about her experience for our Heartstone Spring 2003 issue that captures the wonder of the Expedition experience:

"Flocks of parrots fly by, like they used to do in the South. I have only seen these beautiful things in cages. Here is where they belong, free. There, just sitting on a limb, completely at home, a toucan, the bird every schoolchild knows from coloring books. It's just sitting there. I feel my mouth hanging open all the time..."
