Horizon 2100 is a report prepared by Environment Defense and nine of the state's leading conservation scientists, with support from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, that describes the healthiest environment that North Carolina could have in 100 years and encourages the aggressive conservation that will be required to fulfill that promise. Realizing the vision of Horizon 2100 will require that policies guiding the state's conservation efforts be swiftly and fundamentally altered.
The Environmental Leadership Center of Warren Wilson College and the North Carolina office of Environmental Defense partnered in 2005 to promote a statewide dialogue of the challenges presented in Horizon 2100 called North Carolina's Future Make It Your Business. A series of public forums were conducted in Raleigh, Asheville, Charlotte, and Greenville to engage creative business, political, and social leaders with the scientific community in a discussion of the role each stakeholder plays in insuring a healthy and prosperous future for North Carolina.
The series began with a statewide kick-off in Raleigh at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, where Governor Hunt served as moderator and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation joined the ELC and Environmental Defense as a co-convener.
In Asheville, with support from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, President Emeritus William Friday served as moderator for the meeting held at Warren Wilson College. In Charlotte, Foundation for the Carolinas co-convened the forum at host site UNC- Charlotte and Governor Martin served as moderator. And in Greenville, Chancellor Emeritus Jim Leutze served as moderator at East Carolina University.
The forum follow-up newsletter can be viewed here.
The Environmental Leadership Center of Warren Wilson College and Environmental Defense are building on the momentum generated by the forums to educate and inspire business and civic leaders to plan, long-term, for a healthy and prosperous North Carolina.
