STAFF BIOS

Margo Nottoli Flood
Director

Margo has a lifelong commitment to inspiring positive change and fostering a reverence for life and community through deep connection to the natural world. In her work, she has come to embrace and promote a decision-making model that brings awareness to the economic, social/cultural, and environmental impacts of our personal and institutional actions upon the local and global community. Since 2000, Margo has worked for the ELC as Heartstone Editor, publications manager, program evaluation manager, researching and promoting best practices in sustainability in higher education, developing statewide forums to encourage business sector involvement, managing regional sustainability research projects, Expedition trip-leading, and overseeing the fundraising activities of the ELC. With a B.A. in English from the University of Florida, Master's work in English and Counseling, and extensive non-degree coursework, she has served as teacher, administrator, wilderness instructor, writer, fundraiser, consultant, and workshop designer/presenter for leadership development. This work has included more than fifteen years with Outward Bound and Outward Bound-adaptive programs where she served, most recently, as Managing Director of the North Carolina Outward Bound School.

Stan Cross

Stan graduated with a BA in Psychology from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, in 1993 and is currently enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Asheville's Masters of Liberal Arts program. Stan has a life long love and admiration for nature, human communities and the interdependent dance of the two. While living abroad, Stan studied at the University of Adelaide, Australia and taught for organizations in Australia, Taiwan, and Thailand. Since returning to America, Stan taught environmental education for the Connecticut Audubon Society and Schooner, Inc., coordinated the Singing River Field Center in northern New Mexico and began working for the ELC in 2000. Stan directs the following ELC education programs:  The Green Walkabout©, ELC Student Work Crew, EcoTeam, and the Internship Program. He is a member of Warren Wilson’s Land Use Committee and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Task Force. Stan also serves as president of the Evergreen Community Charter School board, and was named 2007 North Carolina Environmental Educator of the Year.

 

Phillip Ray Gibson

Since July 2005, Phillip has served the Environmental Leadership Center. Phillip directs the "Mountain Green" conference, "Mountain Green Lunch and Learn" series, the radio broadcast Swannanoa Journal, and student work crews that are transferring the knowledge, experiences and data of campus green construction to the region through programs such as INSULATE!.  Phillip manages the ELC website and organizes the student-focused "Putting Passion to Practice" environmental career Lunch & Learn Series with Career Services and support from the G.D. Davidson Life Planning Program (managed by Church Relations).  Phillip also manages environmental regulatory compliance aspects of WWC and has completed environmental compliance management training through the Georgia Institute of Technology.  Phillip earned his B. A. in political science from the University of Louisville and his M.S. in geography from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. Phillip is presently enrolled as a Interdisciplinary Health Studies Ph.D. student with Western Michigan University.  Phillip has served many boards and organizations in North Carolina including the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Advisory Panel, the North Carolina Sedimentation Control Commission, the North Carolina Academy of Science Board of Directors and as a member of the Buncombe County Environmental Advisory Board.
