City of Asheville, Warren Wilson College Join Forces in Effort to Combat Climate Change
ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, Sep. 6 --- In January, Warren Wilson College President Sandy Pfeiffer became the first leader of a private college or university in North Carolina to sign a letter of intent for the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Previously, in 2005, the City of Asheville had signed onto the U.S. Conference of Mayors "Mayors Climate Protection Agreement," which provided the model for the presidents' commitment.
Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that Pfeiffer and Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy have now signed an agreement stating the intent of the city and college to work together toward climate partnership goals. The agreement is thought to be the first such partnership between a city and college that had previously signed climate commitments.
The collaboration is expected to include actions such as the exchange of best practices for monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the development of educational resources and the use of Warren Wilson as a demonstration site.
"This partnership makes sense," Bellamy said. "The city and college share a common concern about the scope of global warming, and we share a belief in the power of community to overcome this challenge."
Pfeiffer noted that Warren Wilson has long been a leader in sustainable practices and facilities, as reflected by the many environmental accolades the college has received. In practice, Warren Wilson was the first college or university in the Southeast to offset all of its energy use with renewable energy credits, or "green" power. It also was the first N.C. higher education institution to have a Gold Certified Building under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Contact Info:
