Ashevillage Institute - Permaculture Intern

Summer Internship Program

The Ashevillage Institute (AVI) is an emerging urban education center and living laboratory for sustainable solutions in action. AVI is based in a cluster of neighborhood house, and is located a seven-minute walk from downtown Asheville. AVI will be entering it's first real season in 2008.

The Ashevillage Institute (AVI) Permaculture Intern will:

Work on site with AVI residents, workshop participants, visiting specialists, and volunteers to help design and implement the permaculture infrastructure, as well as play an active role in supporting programs, visitors, and the living community. The selected AVI Permaculture Intern needs to have an avid Interest in and some experience relating to urban permaculture and ecological regeneration, gardening, sustainability activism and education, community empowerment, natural building, and the center's development, as well as a strong work, team, and communication ethic. The intern will work with a collective of AVI resident interns.

Responsibilities may include some, or all of the following:

Permaculture Implementation - Help implement master permaculture plan; including water catchment, gray water, compost toilet, outdoor shower, outdoor classroom, tent area, etc.
Gardens - Build garden infrastructure, including pathways, beds, trellises, cold frames, dry-stack stone walls, etc.; plant and maintain gardens and compost; acquire and plant seeds, harvest, seed-save, etc
Greenhouse - Help design, set up, and maintain
Salvaged Materials - Identify, acquire, and work with salvaged materials as a first option
Fermentation, Food Preservation, Cooking - Help make mead, tinctures, pickles, preserves, etc; participate in preparing collective lunches
Educational Outreach - Meet and greet visitors, give tours, help direct occasional volunteers, potential work with neighbors, etc.
Program Support - Help set up space before programs (our programs are usually the last Thursday thru Sunday of every month), act as a point support person for visiting specialists, instructors, staff; play various roles as needed
Documentation - Use video and digital cameras to capture the process and activities for archives, reports, newsletters, etc.

Skill-set & characteristics include:

Significant garden experience
Permaculture and bio-dynamic enthusiast; practitioner even better
Carpentry experience a plus, though not necessary
Management and coordination skills
Helpful, reliable, responsible, accountable
Community/collective living experience is a plus
Self starter/self director -and- people person/team player
We like cleanliness and an eye for aesthetic detail
Enjoys rigorous physical work
Friendly, upbeat personality
Jives with our vision

The intern will need their own transportation, but will not need to travel outside of the Asheville Area. A truck would be great, biodiesel best...for hauling stuff.
