Freshman, sophomores and juniors with a commitment to graduate from Warren Wilson College are eligible to apply for the ELC's Internships. Those who apply for an Internship Award may indicate their first, second, and third choices for serving the internship. While every effort will be made to honor the applicant's preferences, the ELC will make the award and the assignment based on applicant's qualifications, the requests of partner institutions, and the availability of funds.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
General criteria are as follows:
• demonstrated commitment to academic excellence;
• demonstrated evidence of character, integrity, and environmental citizenship;
• high motivation to learn, work hard, and communicate;
• endorsement and recommendation from three references (one recommendation must be from the student's faculty advisor, at least two recommendations should be from Warren Wilson College faculty or staff);
• approval of partner institution and the ELC.
FOLLOW-UP REQUIRMENTS
In addition to serving the duration of the internship, Interns must commit to the completing the following:
• writing a reflection paper;
• documenting their internship by photography. Interns must submit 10 to 20 photographs to the ELC to be used in publications;
• completing a minimum of three presentations upon returning to campus. At least one these required presentations must be off-campus. With the exception of Natural Science Seminars, all presentations are to be completed during fall semester. One documented public presentation during your internship may count toward this requirement. A scientific paper submitted for publication in a reputable journal will also count as one presentation.
TO APPLY
Students must submit the following online or directly to the ELC's Education Director, Stan Cross, Box 6323 by February 9:
• a current résumé;
• cover letter;
• three recommendation forms, one from the applicant's faculty advisor.
Applicants are encouraged to take advantage of the services provided by the Career Resource Center as they prepare their cover letter and résumé. Students may schedule an appointment with Dale Roberts by calling ext. 3033.
Finally, applicants are strongly encouraged to contact internship sites directly. Contact information is available from the ELC's Education Director, Stan Cross.
ACADEMIC CREDIT
Students wishing to receive academic credit for ELC Internships must negotiate with faculty willing to serve as independent study advisors, and use the existing internship procedures within those departments.
INSURANCE
Warren Wilson College does not offer insurance coverage for students on external internships. For international experiences an International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is mandatory and available for $22 in the Worldwide Office. This insurance covers medivac and other emergencies. Please contact the WorldWide office at ext. 3783 to obtain this card.
STIPENDS
The general policy for stipends is $7.00 per hour, and most internships assume a 40 hour week. The dates and duration of the internships vary and are indicated in the internship/job descriptions for each site. Some internships include room and board expenses. For others, these expenses are the responsibility of the intern. Compensation for travel is provided for some internships and personal transportation requirements vary depending on the site. It is in the applicant's best interest to carefully review and consider the stipend information for the internships as you apply.

Completed application forms, cover letter, professional résumé and three recommendations are due by February 1. Formal interviews will be scheduled during February. Additional personal and/or phone interviews may be scheduled at the request of the internship partners. Notification of most internship awards will occur March 1.
