Why We Do It: By using locally milled and sustainably harvested wood Warren Wilson College is able to address the ecological and social impacts associated with traditional harvesting methods. Sustainable harvesting is founded on the idea that extraction of the resource, in this case wood, is done at a capacity that does not compromise the quality of the surrounding ecosystem. In this way it works to guarantee continued environmental health, while ensuring our ability to rely on the area for resource extraction far into the future. In addition, using wood that has been locally milled allows us to reduce the energy associated with each unit of wood, as well as to reinvest money into our local economy
How We Do It: On the Warren Wilson College Campus we are fortunate to have 700 acres of forest, from which we are able to sustainably harvest the wood needed to build our buildings and our landscape features
Where to Get It:
The Rainforest Alliance and the Forestry Stewardship Council have Smart Guide Resources, divided into several categories including Green Building Wood Sources and Prodealers and Wholesalers of Green Building Wood Products.
