Recycling and Waste Management

If it sometimes seems hard to believe that “one person can make a difference”, consider the story of recycling at Warren Wilson. The College’s waste management program began in 1982 with one student who was concerned about the campus waste stream. Prior to this all solid waste was collected without any separation of recyclable materials. An implementation of GAIN – Glass Aluminum Including Newspaper – resulted in an immediate 10% reduction in waste. Today the college diverts close to 50% of its waste materials from the landfill by incorporating a number of practices:
