Every year Outdoor Programs hosts the JW Hunt Memorial Challenge on campus in memory of Jason William Hunt, a former student of the Warren Wilson Community, who passed away in 2001.
Teams of 3 co-ed members (students or staff of the college) compete on an orienteering course challenge. The course leads teams to a variety of check points. Some are simple control points to help determine the course while others are staffed checkpoints that present the teams with various challenges. The course is not revealed until the morning of the event, which makes for an excitment in the atmosphere during the final moments before the whistle is blown. This is a small scale event and only open to the WWC community. The challenge takes place in backcountry terrain with lots of fun, mud, grass, trees and the great outdoors.
After the passing of Jason Hunt a memorial was established in his name that would help spread the word of Outdoor Education through working with youth.
