Lyn O'Hare, Director of Academic Support Services, ext. 3012 Basement of Sunderland Dorm, Room 31
Academic counseling is designed to assist students in developing and improving study skills and habits that will enhance their academic success. The Director of Academic Support Services works individually with students to define areas of need and to develop a plan for the improvement of academic performance. Such a plan might include use of the Counseling and/or Career Resource Centers, the Writing Center, departmental tutoring, workshops on a variety of issues including time management, test and note-taking strategies, dealing with stress, math anxiety, and memory and its role in learning.
Tutoring:
Several departments, including mathematics, biology, and chemistry, provide tutoring services on an ongoing basis.
Students having difficulty in a course in which ongoing tutoring is not available, should first speak with the instructor to request help. If tutoring is in order, contact the Director of Academic Support Services, who can arrange for tutoring.
College Academic Skills Course (EDU 116):
In addition to group meetings in which we examine the complexities of the learning process, students work individually to define and address areas of need or interest that will enhance the college academic experience. Topics covered might include goal setting and prioritizing; time management; focus strategies; memory and studying; reading and note-taking techniques; preparation for exams and major and career planning. Students are evaluated on a pass/fail basis.
Lorrie Jayne, Director of the Writing Center & Coordinator of Writing Lab Tutorial Course, ext. 3056 Writing Center Tutors, ext. 3003 Basement of Sunderland Dorm
The Writing Center supports a wide variety of student writing, from creative stories to organic chemistry. A writers' group meets weekly at the Center. Workshops on a variety of writing issues are offered through the Writing Center. Literary journals and other resource materials are also available. Speak with Lorrie Jayne or a Writing Center tutor for more information.
Writing Tutoring:
Writing tutors are available on an appointment basis throughout the week and during limited hours on the weekend to work with students on all facets of college writing, including brainstorming writing topics, paper structure, grammar and final editing.
Writing Lab Tutorial Course (WRI 105/106):
Students contract with writing faculty for a semester's sustained contact with a writing tutor under that faculty member's supervision. The student and faculty member define a focused area for instruction and describe the standards that will indicate the student's successful achievement of an agreed upon goal. Pass/fail is the only grading option. This course may be repeated for an additional single credit.
