September 6-7 -- East Tennessee State University -- First Place (tie)
The Mountain Biking team kicked off their season this past weekend at Eastern Tennessee State University with a tie for first place.
Short Track -- For many riders on the team it was their first introduction to what might be the hardest way possible to spend thirty minutes of one’s life. The Men’s A race was dominated by local college Lees-McRae, but Wilson senior Matt Williams managed to hang with the leaders for a few laps before fading to 11th. Linden Blaisus (16th), David Bishop (17th) and Dustin Schemel (19th) came in close behind Matt in what was a great start to the season for Warren Wilson mountain biking. Ben West and Maxx Cohen also put in strong performances for the Owls. In the Women’s A race, Tallulah Winquist displayed devastating power on the climbs to lead the Wilson women home in 9th. Lauren Parker (11th), Hanna Waldman (12th), and Vanessa Emery (13th) also had strong finishes for Wilson. Racing in the Men’s B race was freshman Josh Cooper (9th), who proved he will be a star of the future for Warren Wilson with a very solid ride. And in the Women’s B race, Nina Otter (1st) did nothing short of dominating the field. She had a one-minute lead after a single lap (of a two-minute course) and never looked back.
Downhill -- The course featured a nice mix of drops, rock gardens and fast, flowing single track. Owls rider AJ Nichols, who returned to school after riding for a year on the Mountain Dew BMX tour, showed that he’s got the goods going downhill too and finished an impressive 4th. In the Women’s A race Hanna Waldman and Lauren Parker proved you don’t need full suspension to go fast, finishing 5th and 10th respectively. In the Men’s B race Phil Martin proved to be a natural, finishing 5th in his first ever downhill race. He was followed by Scott Anderson (14th) and Aaron Peet (16th). Ileana Anderson also raced downhill for the first time, winning the Women’s B class.
Dual Slalom -- Phil Martin showed remarkable improvement with each run, and ultimately finished 3rd in Men’s B. Scott Anderson also rode very well to earn 6th. Aaron Peet rounded things out for the Wilson men with an impressive ride in his first ever dual race. On the women’s side Hanna and Lauren again showed their downhill prowess with top finishes in the Women’s A race Vanessa and Tallulah also raced well for Wilson, and Ileana won the B race, going two for two on the day.
Cross Country -- The Wilson men had their best day ever in this event; they rode hard from the gun and didn’t look back. Ultimately David Bishop came through in 6th, beating out Matt Williams (7th) by 20 seconds. Dustin Schemel, in his first cross country race in years, finished a very impressive 12th while Linden Blaisus (15th), Max Cohen (20th), and Ben West (22nd) rounded out the list of finishers. In the Women’s A race the ever-consistent combo of Lauren Parker and Vanessa Emery finished 7th and 8th, while Nina Otter proved Saturday was no fluke and won the Women’s B race by 16 minutes. In the Men’s B Josh had another solid ride, finishing in 6th place.
