The racing season starts the first week of school and goes until late November. We practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and go to races on the weekends. Monday is usually a recovery ride for those who raced over the weekend and a normal on-campus practice for those who didn't. Tuesday's practice has been dubbed "intensity day" due to hard practices simulating racing conditions. Thursday we go off campus to ride local trails at places like Bent Creek, Pisgah, Tsali, Kitsuma, Montreat, and Alexander Park. We stay out late, sometimes after dark if we are going out to eat afterwards. Friday is usually a normal on-campus practice, but sometimes people going to race over the weekend are packing up or are on the road. All practices start at 4:00, and on campus practices end around 6:30. People are busy, so riders have different levels of interaction with the team and not all attend every practice, but those who train regularly with the team have priority to go to races on the weekends.
At the races there is always a cross-country event and a short track race. Sometimes there is a time trial, dual slalom, 4x, or downhill race as well. Each race has at least three events spread over two days, but not all races have gravity events. Riders are not asked to ride in all events, though some choose to. Rather, riders can focus on doing just endurance or gravity events.
We race in the South Eastern Confrence (check out the SECCC website).
If you are interested in riding for the team you will need to have your own bike, though the team can help with getting discounts. If, and when, something breaks the team has a bike shop and can fix problems, but it does not supply parts. Most trails on campus are open to mountain biking except for the River trail, Suicide Ridge and Cold Springs. Check with someone on the team if you have any questions. Mountain bikers should be courteous to other people on the trail and yeild the right of way. We also have a skills course on campus to practice daul slalom style riding, and a downhill course in in the works (we hope). A helmet is required and staying off the grass is a must (it's special native grass).
If you are interested in the Mountain Bike Team or Warren Wilson College we would love to hear from you.
