Women's Soccer

2008 Preview

The Warren Wilson College women’s soccer team and head coach Stacey Enos (8th season) are very optimistic about the 2008 season and look to improve on a 1-4-5 record from a year ago.  Coach Enos said, “I am extremely excited about the upcoming year.  We return a solid defense and return our leading scorer from two seasons ago.  The women have really been working hard this preseason and are anxious to kick off the 2008 season.”

The 2008 edition of Warren Wilson women’s soccer will look a bit different from a year ago as they lost eight total players (five starters) from last year’s team as six student-athletes graduated and two are studying abroad this semester.  “We welcome a lot of new and talented players this season and the key to the season will be how quickly we mesh as a team,” said Enos.

The owls will kick off the 2008 season at home on Saturday, August 30 against Chowan University led by their three captains; senior defenders Ashley Conley (Daytona Beach, FL/G. Ray Bodley HS) and Lauren Bangasser (Vashon Island, WA/The Thacher School) and junior stopper Amy Woychowski (Portsmouth, NH/Oyster River).

The strength of the 2008 team will once again be led by their defense as they return their entire backfield from a year ago and welcome back a top player from two seasons before.  The defense looks to improve on last year’s success where they allowed only nine total goals and tallied six shutouts.  Woychowski returns after suffering an injury before the 2007 season and she will anchor the stopper position.  Bangasser will return to the sweeper position with Emily Holzer (Richmond, IN/Westtown HS) and Conley marking.  The goalie position will once again be led by returning junior Rachel Schonberg (Durham, NC/Carolina Friends School) who did an outstanding job last year as the starter.  “Our defense will definitely be the strength of our team and will hopefully help kick start our offense,” said Enos.

The offense returns 2007 starting forwards Serena Shah (Pelham, NY/Pelham HS) and Eliana Winderman (Barrington, RI/ Barrington HS) and will receive a jump start from Natalie Epstein (Washington D.C./Waldorf HS), the returning leading scorer from 2006.  The offense only tallied five goals last season and will look to find the back of the net more in 2008.  “We have got to be able to manufacture goals this season, our ability to score will dictate our success,” said Enos.  With Serena and El back along with Natalie, I think we’ll see a much improved offense.”

The middle of the field will sport many new faces led by Bates transfer Kelsey Chandler (Williamstown, MA/Troy HS).  The owls also return senior Heather Walls (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island HS) and will count on her leadership to direct the new faces in the middle of the field.

“Overall, I believe we have a very versatile team and many of our players can play multiple positions,” said Enos.  “We are very balanced and I expect great things from this year’s team.”
