Icycle Report

The Icycle mountain bike race on February 2nd served as the unofficial start to the racing season in the southeast, and the Warren Wilson team showed up to have some fun and burn off the last remaining Christmas cookies. Sixty degree temperatures and sunny skies greeted the riders on Saturday morning, and the five mile course was mostly free of the mud and snow that have slowed racers in past years. The result was a hard, fast race from the gun. Racers started Le Mans style, meaning they had to run to their bikes (and find them amound the many lying around). Semi-Pro rock star (and new transfer) David Bishop lead the Wilson riders home with an 11th place finish in the mixed Pro/Semi-Pro/Expert field. He was followed closly by Pat Hurley (13th, in spite of a broken chain), and Matt Williams (14th). Former team members had a strong day too. Wilson graduate Adam Ray won the whole thing, while Sam Haskitt took the hole shot and ended up 8th. In the men's Sport race another new transfer James Hendershott rode a great race and took 7th. On the women's side our own Kylie Krauss took 3rd, on a single speed (=hardcore).

There was also a single speed race for those crazy enough to race with only one gear, but not so crazy as to race everyone else. Wilson coach Art Shuster showed he still has some speed in his legs by finishing 19th out of nearly 40 riders. Assistant coach Phil Shaw was having an amazing day, but he was slowed by mechanicals and finished disgruntled in the mid-twenties.

All in all it was a great race, more to come soon.
