Basketball Men prove strong against Montreat
Maybe Rob Shook, the new guy in Athletics, doesn’t know us Owls are supposed to be afraid of Montreat. Or maybe Rob didn’t really pay attention to the schedule – coaching two teams now after adopting the men’s team a month ago. Or maybe the Owls are truly the great and determined team they showed the crowd last night.
The men’s basketball team lost by 37 points first time they met Montreat this year – but they changed the story last night under the international flags and hot lights of Hooterdome.
The Owls came out with boxes and x’s and other perfectly implemented plays with secret handshakes and winks and nods and not only scored first, but held the lead for most of the first half.
With three minutes left, the Cavalier coach pulled a full court press on our boys – their bench nine boys deep – ours two.
At half time, outside the Visitor’s locker room, I heard the BM boys whining not to make them do that anymore. There were snotty Cavalier noses and red and puffy Montreat eyes coming back onto the court second half.
The end result was 79 bad guys, 66 good guys – a much less impressive spread for the Cavaliers, and if it wasn’t for endless help on the blue sideline, our green men would have pulled off the upset.
Highlights of the Men’s game: Freshman Aleks Spasovski and Senior Josh Neri both had 17 points for the night; Senior Nate Bell had 12 points; the twins – Chris and John Nelson- pulled down 5 offensive rebounds and John Nelson had the big defensive block on their superstar from Charlotte with two minutes left in the game.
Highlights of the Women’s game vs Bennett College: (also coached by Mr. Shake ‘em and don’t break ‘em Shook) 81-42 loss despite outstanding performances by Georgia Anton with 10 points before fouling out (but they deserved it) and Laura Dison with 7 defensive rebounds, 2 steals and 8 points.
