SID REPORT- 9/18/07- Cross country, Mountain Biking, Men and women’s soccer weekend games

Cross Country’s First Meet: Saturday Sept. 15 at Berea College in Kentucky.

Women's Race/ Results:
Highlighted WWC Women's runner was Chelsea Gay- a transfer freshman.
Chelsea broke out of the women's pack early in the race last Saturday and followed the breakaway group to the front of the field.  The field was lead by a UVA runner who crossed the first mile mark at a tough 5:54 pace.
The runners spread out quickly and Chelsea held her place towards the front. Crossing mile one at 6:37 and keeping a good form.
Aubrey Delone and Mary Phillips ran together, keeping a great pace at 7:20.
The women's field continued to spread, but Chelsea came into the home stretch in tenth overall. A fantastic first race finish and a great time of 21:58.

Women's Results for WWC:
Team Finish 7th Place

Chelsea Gay - 10th overall – Time of 21:58 for 5k (3.1 mile) Course
Aubrey DeLone - 29th Overall – 24:13
Mary Phillips - 32nd – 24:19
Rachel Melo - 49th – 27:31
Rebecca Wood - 50th – 27:32

Race/Results for the Men:
Highlight Runners on the Men's side, Kevin Lane and Geoffrey Steen.
Kevin stayed completely on Jason's predicted pace (faster than his predicted pace). He hit the last three miles to the second as well as the finish time--29:29 a great start to the year.
Geoffrey, ran controlled for the first three miles then picked up the pace. Feeling good, he picked his way through the pack of runners finishing in a high enough place to put his team in the fifth position in the tough field of runners, many of them from Kenya.

The Kenyans were fast, genetically gifted and introduced the teams to the speed and seemingly effortless stride that is the pride of their country.  Pacing each other, they came through the first mile at a 5-minute pace, forcing the entire field of runners to follow in their wake.

For WWC, Chas Beiderman and Kevin Lane came through together at the first mile at 5:35, which was in front of the main pack of runners. They were followed by Will Franklin and Tal Gold pacing each other at a perfect 6 min./ mile pace.

The men's team finished 6th but was only 3 points off of Georgetown College and only 10 points off of University of Virginia (Wise)--a good first run for the WWC team.

Men's Results for WWC
Team Finish 6th Place
Kevin Lane 16th Overall – Time of 29:29 for 8km (5.1 mile) course
Chas Beiderman 20th Overall – Time 30:11
Will Franklin 24th – 30:35
Tal Gold 25th – 30:36
Geoffrey Steen 35th - 31:39

The next cross-country meet is Sept. 21 Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational at Lenori-Rhyne

Mountain bikers races in Athens Georgia

The women’s mountain bike team, impressively huge compared to most other schools’, brought three women to race A’s, and two to race in the B category.  Kylie Krauss finally ended her 2nd place streak, with a win in both the time trial and the cross-country races.
Hanna Waldman finished both races with strong, 5th place finishes.  Freshman Alexis Decosimo finished 7th in the time trial and 6th in the cross-country.
In the women’s B races, a new friendly rivalry has grown between two Wilson riders.  Vanessa Emery edged Lauren Parker at the end of the short-track race, after the two were neck-and-neck the entire race.  Lauren had the edge the next day, however, with a 1st place finish in a women’s B followed closely by Vanessa in 2nd.

Wilson entered six men in the A (expert) races. Three of them finished in the top ten in the time trial totally led by tantalizing team mate Paige Heron in 7th, followed by Linden Blaisus in 9th and Patrick Hurley in 10th. Ryan That’s Mr. Eco RD to You Morra, Matt Flat Cocacola Runs Through My Veins Williams, and Ben Big Country West finished in 16th, 17th, and 18th, respectively, giving a nice, linear top-twenty run for the men.
Patrick was more on form for the short-track, where he led the Wilson men and managed not only to keep his ever-ailing bike in good enough working order to finish on wheels, he also out-sprinted two other riders at the end, providing an exciting finish for those watching.
Pat also had a strong finish the next morning, leading the men with a smiling face, badly chaffed bum (how does that happen with the padded pants?), and a 7th place finish.  Matt was right behind (probably 8th place,) and the others were able to pass riders from rival Division II teams (ETSU and Cumberland) with Linden in 11th, Paige in 12th, and Ben in 14th.

The depth of the team, as exemplified by the strong performances of Vanessa and Lauren, as well as the 6 men’s A riders this weekend is very promising and exciting as we approach the half-way-though-the-season mark on our way to death and destruction (or something slightly more light-hearted) at Nationals in October.

The next meet is September 22-23 at Florida State University

WWC Men’s Soccer vs Averett University 9/15/07

The Warren Wilson men took fifteen shots on the Danville Virginian’s goalie on Saturday.  The Danville Cougars only took 8 shots on Wilson’s goal leaving Brett Buffington with lots of time to relax, reflect and watch the game from 100 yards away.
Half of the Wilson shots created a great in-breath from the crowd, so close that ladies were falling over, puppies were fainting, fathers and roommates were jumping up to cheer.  But only one out of those fifteen went in.
The Cougars, on the other hand, had no fans, complained about every call, yelled at each other, but had two really really fast men up top who took all of their shots – and four of those measly 8 shots on goal, (in the words of their own sports writer) “snuck in.”
When the Owls score, we don’t “sneak them in,” – an Owl goal rings a beautiful intergalactic bell in the back of the net, the faculty on the hill get a chill up their spine, turkeys raise their heads in respect, foxes and bears stop their rambling in the woods and cross themselves.
But the bell eluded the men this weekend; it was a frustrating match to watch; so I’m saying that the one bright spot, the true highlight, was a moment owned by one of Mike’s three assistant coaches.  To set the scene for you who weren’t fainting on the sidelines, two of the big strong burley assistant coaches had tiny little dogs on tiny little leashes with them on the sidelines – but that’s just the movie trailer.  The real hit of the movie was when Caleb Whitaker, former writing fellow of WWC and serving his third year as goalie coach for the men and women, when Caleb’s little dog BROKE LOOSE, BOLTED ACROSS THE FIELD ON A WILD (SEEMINGLY ATTACK) ON THE OTHER TEAMS GOALIE.
Caleb was on the little dog’s heels, but it’s hard to run full out and bend over and catch something 4 inches off the ground at the same time.  Caleb got the hairy drooling scoundrel just moments before it/she/he went into the net and gobbled up the goalie, who’d really had enough excitement all day what with 9 shots from Luke Bernard, 3 from lightening fast Teshale Byan, 2 from crazed freight train Max Bressor, 1 from Ethan Frei and 1 from big Phillip Campbell.

Ending score:  4 for the bad guys.  1 for the good guys.  4 ladies had to be carried out.  Two puppies were exhausted, and there were many many hoarse fans – who spend their Friday nights looking up the roster of the opposing team and come to the game to shout encouraging words to the bad guys, by name, and hometown.
By the way, the one point that the Owls got on the board came in a heated battle in the aftermath of a corner kick by Luke Bernard.

The men’s next game is Friday, September 21, at home against Ferrum College at 4:00.

Women Soccer Queens Stomp up on Averett University 3-0

The women left the Valley Saturday to travel to Danville Virginia.  Before they arrived, they heard of the disappointment on the men’s field against the same team (the Cougars without jog bras.)  I wasn’t there, but I can imagine the steam coming from the women’s ears, that vein sticking out on their foreheads, neck muscles straining, trying to hide the inevitable tears when their fellow night predators have been cheated.
In a great selfless show of support and retaliation, five minutes into the game, Elle M&M Winderman, freshman from Barrington, Rhode Island, finished up a hit from senior Christy Barron to put the Owls on the board.
Information for this write up came from many sources.  Weesie Rookie Pigman, a proud and new Assistant to Stacey, said that Elle tore it up all day long.  She was in the goalies shoes, untying her laces, blowing in her ear, “all over the goalies face every play.”   New name for L on the sidelines: Mighty Mouse.
There were no more scores the rest of the first half.  Emily Holzer filled an important spot in the goal as Rachel Schonberg is out with a shoulder boo boo.  Ashley Conley was back on the field, running the side lines with Sarah Gaskin in their new positions: defender and outside mid and general havoc wreaker.
In Stacey’s new line up, Hanna Cleason and Lauren Bangasser play a double sweeper- don’t-even-think-of-messing-with-us-defense.
The Owls dominated the play all day, taking a total of 26 shots to the Cougars’ 3, but couldn’t get another ball to tickle the back of the net until, again, as the Averette website said, Lauren (LoLo) Kriel and Liz Monster Truck Wilcox came off the bench to score with seven minutes left in the game.
Proud Weesie said LoLo pushed the ball behind the defense and the Virginia girls saw nothing but LoLo’s heels and elbows as she drilled down the field.  Then a few minutes later, with a little help from Liznotlaura, the red head from Springfield, IL, LoLo lobbed a shot over the keeper’s head from 20 yards out sealing the fate of the wounded Felines.
It ain’t always pretty what LoLo does, but she gets it done.
Ending score was 3-0 – the first win of the season for the women.

The next game is away down yonder in Tigerville, SC against mean and green North Greenville College at 6pm Friday September 21.
