This past weekend was a combined parents and alumni weekend-brilliant idea. Who thought of that anyway? Give em a raise.
Moms, dads, nieces, nephews and grandparents were in the stands- impressed by the skills and speed of the limbs of their family tree.
The 10 year reunion of the class of 97 was there, surprised by receding hairlines and overfull bellies.
And all those alumni that come back every year were there, with kids in tow, stories to inflate, and games to remember.
As “Oh my goodness, you didn’t reproduce, did you?” was expressed on the sideline between old friends, the men took on archenemy Southern Virginia- the Fighting Mormon Knights.
The boys in white outplayed the boys in green, but the boys in green got the calls in their favor – the first being a dive in the box that got called as a foul, putting the owls behind in the 15th minute; and even though they were getting outplayed, the point on the board for the Visitors, up there in lights and everything, pumped up the Mormons-- like Brazil in the world cup quarter finals against the US women. Brazil scores on a dumb penalty kick – who can’t score on a penalty kick—and gets all pumped up and then they (the Knights as well as the Brazilians) score again before the half is over.
The owls kept their heads up and put a point on the score board in the second half on a corner taken by Kyle Carpenter, knocked in by Luke the Leaping Crazy man Bernard, leaving the final frustrating score 1 for the healthy rowdy Hooters, 2 for the wholesome boys from Virginia.
The Women played Highland Football Club for homecoming/parents weekend-- with two injured starters on the bench- Goalie Rachel Schonberg with a guitar pick sized plate behind her eye; and Ashley Conley, on crutches.
The 17 years olds in red don’t do anything but play soccer- they don’t take college classes, they still eat their mom’s food; they don’t have to juggle work, life, school, service, sports and car problems. They play soccer all the time- have been doing so since they were five years old, together, in the same outfits with the same matching bags.
But don’t be fooled by their youth – coached by a Brevard alumna, they are organized, tough, fast and fit. And we are most of those things too. Stacey Enos has pulled some tricks out of her illustrious soccer career to use the strength of our team, not always flawless, but always gutsy and creative. The game was perfectly matched in runs and shots, and the ending score reflected it –scoreless – which usually bores American fans, but our fans are special. They cheer every run, every tackle, all the falls, some of the whiffs; they chant and sing, they take pictures for the family album.
Close calls for the good guys was a near header of Lauren Kriel - LoLo’s hair is not big enough, or stiff enough for that header she nicked—we are suggesting product for the next game. And Shannon’s chip off Amanda’s corner that fell in right where the goal was at practice, not where the sneaky refs moved it just before the game.
The men, mentally exhausted after the fight with the Knights, but with plenty of energy left, beat the alumni 3-1. First score was by Brett Buffington, against his old teammate in the goal. The second was by Brett (so happy to be on the pitch) and the third by Luke Bernard. Stevan Cavallo held the goal for the owls.
Two days later the women played undefeated Salem College. Salem is still undefeated, but they didn’t beat us. For an answer to this mystery, and many others, go to the women’s soccer page. (Photos are included of both games as well).
