Welcome to the shop.
The Blacksmith Crew at Warren Wilson is a relatively new program. Started in 2001, the Blacksmith shop was created out of a sense that heritage was and is an integral part of the college's mission. The shop itself can accommodate four blacksmiths at a time. There are two coke/charcoal forges -- "Mary Sarah and Brenda Dale" -- as well as two gas forges. The Blacksmith Crew fills work orders from various other crews on campus such as the Farm and Garden, but also create pieces that are sold at public sales such as the Annual WWC Garden Sale and Festival on the Field. Some members of the crew are available for free-lance work.

Our working blacksmith shop.
Our first priority is to help Warren Wilson stand out physically with original artwork working functionally and integated into the school's landscape. As a part of the Blacksmith crew's mission to the community, there is at least one open house every semester at which members of the campus community can come to the shop and experience blacksmithing for themselves. Also, the Blacksmith Crew likes to hold demonstrations at local schools to help youth understand the significance and history behind blacksmithing -- and to see an art form they may have never seen before. The crew also attends the area's ABANA (Artist Blacksmith Association of North America) chapter meetings to learn from local blacksmiths. If you or your school is interested in hosting a demonstration please email us at blacksmith@warren-wilson.edu.
