The community service Newman participated in at Wilson inspired him to dedicate himself, through work with many organizations, to the environmental conservation and wellbeing of western North Carolina.

From 1998- 2003, he served as the Executive Director of the Western North Carolina Alliance, where he worked to pass the Clean Smokestacks Act through the North Carolina Legislature. In 2003, Brownie was elected to the Asheville City Council. As a member of the council, Brownie helped make Asheville a national leader in support of clean, renewable energy. In 2008, Brownie became a partner and Project Finance Director for a new solar energy development company called FLS Energy.

I believe our addition to fossil fuels and global warming are the most urgent issues facing society today.
