Karl Campbell '78

Major: History / Political Science
Current Job: Author / Historian and Associate Professor of History, Appalachian State University

“My experience at Warren Wilson codified my liberalism and deepened my commitment to social justice. Warren Wilson was the turning point that led me to be a professor and then write a kind of history that serves social justice.” says Karl Campbell, a 1978 Wilson graduate and history/political science major. While working on his PhD at UNC Chapel Hill, Campbell came across Sam Ervin’s papers, sparking his interest in this mysterious historical figure. His recent book, Senator Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers, is receiving much critical acclaim. One reviewer says the book is “a masterful political biography.” Along with working on his historical writing, Karl teaches at Appalachian State University—not far from his roots in Wilson.
