Jack Kent Cooke 2008
Graduate School Scholarships of Up to $300,000
Available to Low-Income Students in All Academic Disciplines
Next year about 40 college seniors or recent graduates will receive scholarships through the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Program. Each student’s scholarship will cover tuition, room, board, fees, and books—up to $50,000 a year—for up to six years.
“The Foundation’s objective is to help advance the education of high-achieving, low-income students …,” said a foundation officer. “By investing in these exceptional college graduates, we hope to further unleash their potential to become leaders and visionaries in their respective fields.”
Last year 34 Jack Kent Cooke Scholars were chosen from among nearly 1,000 students nominated by their schools. Now in its seventh year, the program has awarded more than 300 scholarships to students from 48 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 40 foreign countries.
Suzanne Martin, a Warren Wilson graduate who majored in art and psychology, was a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar in 2005. She went on to graduate study at Shenandoah University.
Scholarship recipients study in a wide range of fields including medicine, law, education, international relations, and the fine arts.
Students must be nominated by their college or university; they cannot apply directly to the foundation. But interested students are encouraged to ask their schools to nominate them and to facilitate the application process.
Each school can nominate one or two students. Candidates then undergo a rigorous assessment at two stages by independent panels of academic experts, including graduate school deans, admissions counselors, and faculty. The selection criteria include academic achievement and financial need, as well as a will to succeed, leadership, and community involvement.
