In The Odyssey, Homer tells us that as Odysseus struggles on his long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, his son, Telemachus, faces his own struggles. Opportunistic suitors are trying to grab Odysseus' kingdom by persuading Penelope, Odysseus' wife, to forget about Odysseus and marry one of them. Telemachus doesn't know what to do, and his father is not there to advise him. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, takes pity on Telemachus and comes to him in the form of an old man, a wise counselor, whose name is Mentor.
Career Services can't promise that a Greek god will intervene on your behalf, but we can help you look for a mentor--a person experienced in an area in which you are interested.
You may want a mentor doing a kind of work that interests you, such as environmental education, business, making guitars, or managing a nonprofit organization.
You may want a mentor with whom you share an important belief or concern--someone from your spiritual tradition or faith community, someone who shares your concern for peace and justice, someone who is passionate about chemistry.
You may be looking for a mentor who can help you learn your way around a new city or country to which you plan to move after graduation.
You may want a mentor who has experience in an organization or school to which you are applying: law school, graduate school, the Peace Corps, or AmeriCorps.
Career Services is building a database that includes the names of hundreds of prospective mentors. This list includes WWC staff and faculty, alumni, friends of the College, and members of the local community who have volunteered to serve as mentors.
