Our Dates and Repertoire for the Summer of 2008

—notes on the programs by Festival Director, Frank Ell.

CONCERT I
String Quartet No. 15 in D minor, K. 421 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Piano Trio No. 4 in B♭ major, Opus 11, “Gassenhauer” Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Opus 81 Antonín Dvořák

What better way to start the season, than with a Mozart String quartet? This is one of the finest string quartets he wrote, and the Degas Quartet promises to give us a great reading of it. Next, we have a youthful Beethoven piece for clarinet, piano, and cello, in which you may already hear the rambunctious, rhythmical Beethoven leaving the influence of Mozart. The concert ends with the rich, melodic piano quintet by Dvořák. You will be singing its melodies in your head for days!

CONCERT II
Fantaisie for Flute and Piano, Opus 79 Gabriel Fauré
Sextet for Piano and Wind Quintet, Opus 100 Francis Poulenc
String Quartet No. 2, Opus 17, Sz. 67 Béla Bartók

The program begins with a virtuoso flute piece, in which our new flautist, George Pope, makes his début; it is a romantic, tour de force. Next, we have the Poulenc sextet: Poulenc and his peers reacted to the excesses of the Romantic period by writing witty, urbane music—Poulenc is at his best, in this piece! The six Bartók string quartets are considered the successors to the great quartets of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Bartók is famous for his use of Hungarian folk music in his pieces. In this quartet, you hear the folk-tunes, rhythms and the visceral quality of the mountain music: it is an extremely exciting piece! (You may hear the Degas quartet playing the first movement of this great piece here).

CONCERT III
Notturno Concertante in E♭ major, Opus 68 Jan Ladislav Dussek
Kleine Kammermusik für fünf Bläser, Opus 24, No. 2 Paul Hindemith
Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Opus 60 Johannes Brahms

Notturno Concertante is a piece for horn, violin and piano. This “night piece” is a great start to the program, and marks the first time we have performed a work by Dussek at the Festival. The second piece, by Hindemith, is his masterful woodwind quintet, “A Little Chamber Music.” Hindemith's music is very clear, with a strong sense of musical direction. It has been many years since we performed it, so sit back and enjoy it. Little needs to be said about Brahms or his chamber music. His third, and last, piano quartet has a thoughtful richness that is incomparable.

CONCERT IV
Concerto in D major, TWV 53:D2 Georg Phillip Telemann
Optics for Woodwind Quintet, Trumpet and Piano (World Premiere) Ron Newman
String Quartet in G minor, Opus 10 Claude Debussy

Richard Illman, trumpet virtuoso, will join us for this concert. The Telemann piece features a piccolo trumpet with winds (oboe and flute—originally, Telemann scored it for two oboes) and continuo. Next, this year's Composer in Residence, Ronald Newman, brings us Optics, a jazzy new piece written especially for the Festival. Its three movements are called “Kaleidoscope;” “Mirror;” and “Prism”—and attempt to mimic, musically, these visual effects! After the Newman you will be able to listen for foreshadowings of jazz elements in Debussy's only string quartet.

CONCERT V
Serenata invano, F.S. 68 Carl Nielsen
Octet in F major, D. 803 Franz Schubert

We close the season with two pieces that we have not presented for a number of years. Nielsen's “Serenade in Vain” is program music, about a group of musicians who help out a friend, by serenading his amour. That's right, she doesn't show up at the window. The Schubert Octet is, perhaps, the greatest work ever written for a combination of strings and winds: I can't think of a better way to bring the 2008 season to a close!
