A day without chemistry is like a day without sunshine!!
-Vicki Collins
The primary goal of the Chemistry Department is to help our students to succeed. We also want our students to see the beauty and utility of chemistry. At least one faculty member is available during the day to help students with lab work, homework, careers, roommate problems, etc. Student assistants are often available in the evening for tutoring. The emphasis is on lab work, and students are expected to learn how to use our modern instrumentation, an extremely marketable skill.
We have a conventional chemistry major and a biochemistry concentration. Students in biochemistry take many of the conventional chemistry, math and physics courses but also complete courses in molecular biology. Our graduates tend to be successful and work in a wide variety of careers.
All chemistry majors work with a faculty mentor to complete a research project. This project lasts for three semesters and culminates in a public presentation called the Natural Science Seminar.
Many chemistry students work on the Chemistry Work Crew. In many ways this work assignment is more valuable than classroom activities because it provides so much practical work experience that will be useful in the work place.
