Chemistry Cats

Avagadro, The Original Chemistry Cat

Avagadro (1985-2000)

In 1985 the Chemistry Lab was inundated with mice. Avogadro was brought to the lab to decrease the population of mice. This process required about one month, but during this time Avogadro became the chemistry mascot. He would often stroll into class and fall asleep on book bags or coats. Some students claimed that he brought them good luck on an examination if he walked across their exam paper.

He survived being hit by a car, an attack by a campus dog and a fight with a possum.

During the summer of 2000, he began to lose weight; he seemed to have difficulty eating. He was hit and killed by a car while crossing Warren Wilson Road on Tuesday, July 17, 2000. He was buried in the garden and mourned by many faculty and students.

Dichromate, The Chemistry Cat

Dichromate(1997-)

Dichromate(1997-)

Dichromate, the Unfriendly Chemistry Cat, came to live in Witherspoon Science Building in the spring of 2000. He spends most of his time hidden under the stairs. He visits the Chemistry Lounge when he is hungry, in the morning and late in the afternoon. At night when the building is quiet and there are many students in the Chemistry Computer Lab, he emerges and spends a little time with selected friends.

His birthday is April 15, 1997.

Dichromate was featured in an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
