Hamill Science Center
The Hamill Science Center is composed of the J. Houston Witherspoon Science Building, Morse Science Hall, Bannerman Technology Center, and the Ferguson Courtyard. The chemistry labs and chemistry offices are located on the second floor of Witherspoon. Biology/Environmental Studies labs and offices are located on the first floor of Witherspoon. Most chemistry courses are taught in classrooms in Morse Science Hall. Morse Hall also contains the greenhouse, some biology labs and additional faculty offices for the Departments of Biology and Environmental Studies . The Bannerman Technology Center houses Computing Services.
The Hamill Science Center was funded by the Centennial Campaign, a $2 million gift from the Beattie Foundation, and a generous gift from J. Houston Witherspoon, a long time member of the Board of Visitors. The Hamill Science Center was designed by Cort Architectural Group of Asheville. The general contractor for the project was Buncombe Construction.
General Chemistry Lab
The chemistry facilities include the General Chemistry Lab, an Instrument Lab, the John and Edith Solomon Organic Chemistry Lab, the Advanced Lab, a Computer Lab, an Assistants Lab, the Chemistry Lounge and four faculty offices. Much of the instrumentation in the Instrument Lab was provided by a generous grant from J. Houston Witherspoon. The focal point of the Chemistry Department is the Chemistry Lounge which is near the General Chemistry Lab, the Assistants Lab, the faculty offices and the Elvis Shrine.
