Vicki Collins has taught chemistry at Warren Wilson College since 1976. She maintains that watching student success is the best part of her job. She also serves as department chair, and the photo shows her awarding a car to a new chemistry major, Vanessa Philson ('02), at the annual department picnic.
A background in chemistry allows one to enter many useful fields, and Collins has found chemistry a great beginning for work in agriculture and life sciences. In addition to beginning chemistry and thermodynamics, she teaches courses in biochemistry and nutrition. She enjoys supervising student research projects with practical applications. Some projects have included nutritional analyses of plant and animal products from our farm and forest, animal feeding studies, measurement of mercury and selenium in tissues and sediments, mycotoxins in foods and feeds, and investigation of bioactive natural products. Many of her former students have built on the success of their undergraduate research by entering graduate and professional schools.
