About Peter Galbert

Peter Galbert is a full time chairmaker. Before specializing in green wood chairmaking he built custom cabinetry and furniture as well as museum displays.

Peter has taught at many craft schools around the country including the Penland School of Crafts, the North Bennet Street School, the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, Peters Valley Craft School, Kelly Mehlers School of Woodworking, Highland Woodworking and the Arrowmont School of Crafts. Peter Galbert is one of the finest Windsor Style Chair Makers working today. Warren Wilson College is both pleased and honored to offer a six day hands on class with Pete, centered on his version of the Balloon Back Windsor.

Workshop Description

The class will begin by selecting and splitting logs to yield straight grained wood essential to the stability and strength of the chair parts. With the use of a froe, drawknive and spokeshaves, the parts will be refined to near final dimensions and dried in a kiln. Turnings will be supplied due to time constraints. Seats will be carved by hand using a combination of adze, scorp, travisher, and scrapers. Layout and exact drilling of mortises will be done using hand tools. The preparation and steam bending of the back piece will be completed by each student. Final assembly and a demonstration of Pete’s newly discovered milkpaint and shellac finish will complete the class. Pete’s class is so much more than simply producing a chair. His years of experience and experimentation as shown in his blog, come to life as he explains the why and how of each aspect of the building and design process. His presentation and teaching abilities, like his chairs, are well thought out. You will leave the class with the ability and understanding to produce the Balloon Back Windsor and you'll be on track to produce any chair.
